Details :
- MBBS stands for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. It is a 5 ½ years course (4 ½ Years Study + 1 Year internship) after 10+2 and other equivalent qualification with Biology, Physics and Chemistry as compulsory subjects.
- MBBS in India is run by MCI (Medical Council of India). MCI grants permission for colleges / universities in India to run MBBS course after through inspection. Not only at time of granting permission, MCI inspects each college / university every year so that the college is running the course as per MCI guidelines.
Students should compulsory check whether the college / university they are willing to join is MCI approved or not, in case of not approved colleges, the degree awarded by that college / university will not be valid
- Unlike any other course MBBS is very tough and getting a merit seat in MBBS is not an easy task.
- MBBS is a two bachelors degrees i.e., Bachelor of Medicine , Bachelor of Surgery in one domain as Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. It is a tradition of United kingdom which is now being followed in the various universities across the world.
- After completion of the course the student is eligible to prefix “Doctor” in his name
- Subjects such as Human Anatomy, Human Physiology Including Bio-Physics, Biochemistry, Introduction to Humanities & Community Medicine, Forensic Medicine including Toxicology, Dermatology and Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Orthopaedics, Radiotherapy etc.., are taught in MBBS.
- In India for securing a seat in MBBS student must compulsory qualify in NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) which is a National Level entrance exam for MBBS. A student cannot pursue MBBS under any quota, if they do not qualify in NEET.
Duration :
- MBBS is a 5 ½ years course out of which 4½ years is the academic study and 1 year compulsory internship.
- MBBS course is a Undergraduate course it will follow the semester pattern. There will be 9 semesters, each of 6 months (4 ½ Years) after that there will be a 1 year of internship.
- After completion of the 4½ years study and passing in all the subjects, a student is then given a Provisional registration certificate by MCI (Medical Council of India) or state medical council.
- The 1 year internship is called CRRI (Compulsory Rotatory Residential Internship), wherein the student has to work in the hospital attached to the medical college or any other approved hospital for 1 year.
Eligibility :
- Age Limit : The minimum age to pursue MBBS is 17 years. Student has to be 17 years old, or should be attending 17 years by December 31st during the year of admission.
- Qualification : Must have complete 10+2 or equivalent qualification with Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects, and must obtain combined minimum 50% in these subjects. (40% for SC/ST).
- MUST COMPULSORY ATTEND NEET AND QUALIFY IN NEET.
Entrance Exam :
- National Level Exam : National Level Exam for MBBS is NEET. There is 15 % AIQ (All India Quota) under NEET for all colleges, which will be filled by NEET AIQ Score.
- State Level Exam : From 2017 there is no separate State Level exam for MBBS. State Quote seats (85%) will also be filled as per NEET Score only.
Scope :
- After completion of MBBS, the graduates are eligible to use “Dr” prefix in their name.
- They can practice on their own by opening a clinic.
- They can work as a Doctor or Surgeon in any Private or Government hospitals.
- They can work for any research institutes for clinical research.
- Apart from that a MBBS graduate can find employee in Pharmaceutical Companies, Bio medical companies, laboratories etc.,
