- After completion of B Optm the graduates are called Optometrist.
- An optometrist will be able to conduct comprehensive eye examination and correct refraction errors and provide prescriptions for spectacles.
- Will be able to evaluate, prescribe and dispense contact lens for refractive condition and other optical conditions.
- Will be able to determine the cause for low vision and provide comprehensive low vision care.
- The optometrists can work independently as an independent practitioner or can work for an eye clinic or eye hospital (both government and private sectors).
- Can undergo research projects related to eye care.
- Can undertake public vision screening eye camps in schools, colleges, rural areas, urban slums.
- Can also practice as occupational optometry in industries.
Sectors:
Corporate Sector : Optometrists are employed under various lens manufacturing companies as professional service people. Some pharmaceutical and surgical instrument companies related to eye also recruit them.
Private Practice: The best scope for an optometrist is self practice, an optometrist can open their optometry clinic where they can examine and prescribe spectacles or other visual aids.
Eye Care Hospitals: Optometrists can work for a government or private eye care hospitals or clinics, where they can provide services like prescribing glasses, contact lens, provide low vision care service, consulting on vision therapy.
Education sector: Optometrists can be employed as a teaching faculty and clinical practice depending upon their experience and qualification.
Research: Research areas in optometry are quiet vast ranging from binocular vision, optics, contact lenses, public health, glaucoma, retinal diagnostics, low vision to primary eye and health care. Optometrists
can involve himself in vision science researches, not restricted with any specific areas.
