B. Sc. Horticulture

Horticulture is a part of Agriculture, where agriculture deals with cultivating and farming for food products on a large scale, Horticulture deals with cultivating fruits and vegetables on a small scale. The word “Horticulture” is derived from the Latin word  Hortus which means “Garden” and Cultus which means “Cultivation”.

Details :

  • B Sc. (Horticulture) stands for Bachelor of Science in Hortiulture. It is a 4 years course after 10+2 and other equivalent qualification with Biology, Physics and Chemistry as compulsory subjects.
  • Horticulture is a sub branch of Agriculture, where agriculture deals with cultivation and farming on a large scale, whereas Horticulture deals with fruit and vegetables farm on a small scale.
  • The word “Horticulture” is derived from the Latin word  Hortus which means “Garden” and cultus which means “Cultivation“.
  • Students are taught about various cultivation methods, plant conservation, landscape restoration, arboriculture, landscape and garden design, construction and maintenance. 
  • The person practicing Horticulture is known as “Horticulturist” . A horticulturist is not 

Duration :

  • B Sc. (Horiculture) is a 4 years course which is semester wise pattern so there are 8 semesters.

Eligibility :

  • Age Limit : The minimum age to pursue B.Sc (Horticulture) is 17 years. Student has to be 17 years old, or should be attending 17 years by December 31st during the year of admission.
  • Qualification : Must have complete 10+2 or equivalent qualification with Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects, and must obtain combined minimum 50% in these subjects. (40% for SC/ST).

Entrance Exam :

  • National Level Exam : National Level Exam for B Sc. Horticulture is AIEEA UG. There is 15 % seats in Agriculture universities are reserved for AIEEA Merit.

  • JCECE (Jharkhand)
  • KEAM (Kerala)
  • KCET (Karnataka)
  • TS EAMCET (Telanagna)

Scope of B. Sc. Horticulture:

  • B Sc. Agriculture course is in huge demand since past 5 years, as there are very good job opportunities for Agriculture graduates in Government and private sector.
  • It is estimated that by 2020 there will be around 60,000 job requirements in Agriculture sector, but as per the current situation there will be still 30,000 jobs vacant as there are not many agriculture graduates, so there is less competition as compared to other courses.
  • Students from south state like Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are migrating to other states in North and west to purse agriculture if they don’t get a seat in their respective states.
 

Career opportunities :

  • State Government Jobs such as Agriculture Officer, Agriculture Extension officer, Assistant Director of Agriculture, Bank Loan officer etc.., are available as the notification of respective state.
