UNIVERSITIES

University is a higher education institute same as a college, but is having a wider platform in terms of academics, infrastructure, courses availability. 

Universities design and approve their own courses. Universities are affiliating universities which means they setup the courses and syllabus to the affiliated colleges.

The yearly or semester exams of the affiliated colleges is conducted by the affiliating University.

The word University is derived from the Latin word “University Magistrorum Et Scholarium” which means “A Community of teacher and Scholars”.

Universities in India

Universities in India are determined, permitted and inspected by UGC (University Grants Commission). UGC is a statutory body under an Act of Parliament.

In other countries Universities are limited to only Master and Ph D courses, but in India universities also offer various Undergraduate and diploma courses also.

There are four types of universities in India (i) Central Universities, (ii) State Universities, (iii) Deemed Universities, (iv) Private Universities.

(i) Central Universities

 A Central University is a university which is been established and maintained by the Central Government (Government of India). 
As of 31-12-2017, there are 47 Central Government Universities in India as per UGC.

 

(ii) State Universities

 A State University is established and run by the respective State Government in which the university is available. The State University is mostly affiliating university, wherein they grant permissions and administer a large number of affiliated colleges located with in the state territories.
As of 31-12-2017, there are 367 State Universities in India as per UGC.
 

(iii) Deemed Universities

 “Deemed university” or “Deemed to be University” is a status given to Higher Education Institutes by Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development on the advice of the UGC (University Grants Commission). Deemed University can have their own syllabus, own guidelines, fee structures. These universities are one step near to be become a full fledged university.
As of 06-10-2017, there are 123 Deemed Universities in India as per UGC.
 

(iv) Private Universities

 Private University is a University which is been established and run by a private organisation. The private universities are permitted and inspected by UGC and they have to follow the guidelines of the UGC. Private universities cannot have off campus centers.
As of 06-10-2017, there are 282 Private Universities in India as per UGC. 

 

Apart from the above categories there are other institutions which are permitted to award degrees autonomously. These institutions cannot be termed as “University” but can be called as “autonomous institutions”.

These institutes cannot affiliate colleges. They come under the administration of Department of Higher Education.

These institutes include 

  • IIIT (Indian Institutes of Information Technology)
  • IIT (Indian Institutes of Technology)
  • AIIMS (All branches)
  • IISER (Indian Institutes of Science Education Research)
  • IIM (Indian Institute of Management)
